|Warning: Let the dust settle|
If you enjoy woodworking, be sure to take precautions against the dust kicked up from your hobby. Exposure to wood dust may increase your risk of lung cancer by as much as 60 percent, according to a study in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.
Researchers compared the wood dust exposure of more than 1,300 lung cancer patients with nearly 1,200 cancer-free adults and found the risk for lung cancer was three times higher for people exposed to wood dust on the job.
Investigators also found an interaction between wood dust exposure and cigarette smoking. Wood dust exposure increased risk of lung cancer by 57 percent, and smoking increased risk by 71 percent. However, people exposed to both increased their risk by 187 percent.
