Lacing up your walking shoes may be the last thing you want to do if you’ve been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, but it could help save your life, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers looked at the exercise habits of nearly 3,000 women diagnosed with stage I, II and III invasive breast cancer and found that women who exercised at a moderate level three to five hours a week had higher survival rates than women who exercised less than an hour a week. Both overweight and normal-weight women benefited from exercise’s protective effects, while women with stage III cancer benefited the most. The American Cancer Society recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, five or more days a week, for adult cancer survivors.
