Adding folate and vitamin B12 to bread and cereal could prevent 30,000 heart attacks a year, according to a University of California study. These nutrients help lower blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that’s often elevated in heart attack victims. One milligram of folate, found in many fruits and vegetables, and half a milligram of vitamin B12, found in meat, fish, poultry and milk, in the daily diet appear to be all it takes to reduce homocysteine levels in adults with coronary heart disease and possibly prevent the disease in people with no known symptoms, the study notes.
