|6 steps to banishing blisters|
Has a painful blister on your foot sidelined your running or walking routine? Take these treatment steps to help you get back on your feet:
- Clean your hands and the blister with soap and water, then swab the blister with iodine or rubbing alcohol.
- Sterilize a clean needle with rubbing alcohol, then puncture the blister at several spots near the blister’s edge. Leaving the overlying skin in place, let the blister drain.
- Treat the blister with an antibiotic ointment and cover with a bandage or gauze.
- Watch for infection. Call your healthcare provider if pus forms or the area becomes red, warm or increasingly painful.
- Prevent blisters by protecting sensitive areas with fitness socks that have extra padding. You can also put moleskin in areas of your shoes—such as the heel—where the shoe is most likely to rub.
- Make sure your shoes are the right size. Have your feet measured. If they differ in size, buy the larger-size shoe. You should have ample room to wiggle your toes.
