|HealthExtra: Diabetes slows trauma recovery|
Diabetes carries a boatload of health threats, causing damage not only to your heart but to your nerves, eyes, kidneys, gut, feet and skin, too. The news gets worse, according to a report in Archives of Surgery. Researchers compared data on nearly 12,500 patients in trauma centers who had diabetes with a group of the same size who didn’t have diabetes. Results showed people with diabetes spend more days in the intensive care unit, require more ventilator support and have more complications after being hospitalized for trauma than those who don’t have diabetes. Approximately 20.8 million Americans have diabetes, says the American Diabetes Association—and more than 6 million don’t even know they have the disease.
