|HealthExtra: Fluoridated water: It’s not just for kids|
You don’t have to be a child to benefit from fluoridated water, according to a study published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry. Researchers examined whether access to fluoridated water reduced the number of dental fillings and related costs needed by children as well as adults and older adults. They found that all three groups benefited, but older adults benefited most. Participants were members of a dental health maintenance organization and so had access to dental care through insurance. However, since many older adults are retired and don’t have dental insurance, study authors underscore the importance of prevention and note the benefits of community water fluoridation.
