HealthExtra: Move free: Practice tai chi

Not every exercise regimen requires vigorously pumping your arms and legs and drenching yourself in perspiration. One ancient exercise form, tai chi, involves a routine of slow, relaxed and graceful movements. Each movement flows into the next as you breathe deeply and meditate. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says tai chi may help you:

  • improve muscle strength, coordination, balance and flexibility
  • ease pain and stiffness, such as from arthritis
  • improve sleep
  • reduce stress
