|Ibuprofen relieves pain best<|
When it comes to bruises, breaks and sprains, ibuprofen beats kids’ pain better than acetaminophen and even codeine. In a study reported in Pediatrics, emergency room doctors evaluated more than 300 children ages 6 to 17 who suffered musculoskeletal injuries to the arms, legs, back or neck. Using a common tool, the kids rated their pain, ranging from “no pain” to “the worst pain they have ever felt,” and received a standard oral dose of ibuprofen, acetaminophen or codeine. After an hour, the kids who took ibuprofen experienced the greatest pain relief with a 24 mm drop in their pain score (out of a possible 100 mm). The kids who took acetaminophen saw their pain score drop 12 mm and those who took codeine, 11 mm. The kids who received ibuprofen were also least likely to ask for more pain medicine.
