|Parents’ pages: Can breastfeeding ward off diabetes?|
Breastfeeding your child and then teaching healthy eating habits can be a good way to ensure that he or she won’t develop type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that children who were breastfed for any length of time were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who weren’t breastfed. However, breastfeeding’s diabetes-preventing benefit dwindled if the child was already overweight or obese. What researchers did find is that breastfed children were overall less likely to be obese and that may be why they had less type 2 diabetes among them.
