Asking this simple question may be key to getting children to eat more fruit. When cafeteria workers asked elementary school children if they wanted fruit or juice with their lunch, 90 percent took one or the other and 80 percent consumed it, compared to only 60 percent of children who took fruit when not asked, reports a recent study in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. In schools participating in the National School Lunch Program, children can choose three of these nutritional options: milk, grains and breads, meat or meat substitute and fruits and vegetables. So offer your kids fruit frequently and chances are they’ll eat more of it.
