Research shows that cough and cold medicines don’t cure ailments and may not relieve symptoms either. Yet one in 10 children use these remedies during any given week, say researchers from Boston University’s Slone Epidemiology Center. Cough and cold medicines can lead to serious side effects or even death, and the remedies haven’t proven effective in young children. The most common drugs include decongestants and antihistamines followed by cough medicines and expectorants. Researchers found that the preschool set, ages 2 to 5, were given these medicines most often.
