|Fishing for a safe meal|
Experts recommend eating fish as part of a healthy diet. But some swimmers contain harmful levels of mercury. Women who are nursing, pregnant or planning to become pregnant should follow these U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommendations:
- When it comes to freshwater fish, don’t eat more than one serving (six ounces) a week.
- Just say “no” to shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish.
- Each week, you can eat 12 ounces (cooked) of shellfish, canned fish, smaller ocean fish and farm-raised fish.
- Eat seafood purchased in stores and restaurants—it has less mercury than freshwater fish caught by family and friends.
