4 tips to keep your mouth healthy

Go beyond brushing and flossing with these tips from the National Women’s Health Resource Center:

1. Consider a powered toothbrush. They’re more effective than manual toothbrushes.

2. Cavity? Ask your dentist about glass ionomers. The tooth-colored fillings slowly release fluoride to help prevent decay.

3. Get enough calcium and vitamin D. If you don’t, you’re more likely to develop periodontal disease. Ask your healthcare provider how much you need.

4. Reduce your risk of mouth and throat cancers. Drinking, smoking and using tobacco raise the risk, as may wearing ill-fitting dentures. Alert your dentist to any sores or lesions in your mouth.
