Do you really need that expensive supplement? Some supplements like calcium, vitamin D and iron can be very beneficial for those taking them. But every year Americans spend billions of dollars on supplements they may not need—$2 billion alone on arthritis remedies such as shark cartilage, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Many supplements just haven’t been proven effective or even safe. Before you take anything, talk with your physician.
