The American Urological Association has issued new guidelines regarding when men should begin having the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to detect prostate cancer. The new guidelines suggest that men have a baseline PSA test at age 40 rather than age 50, but also suggest that yearly PSA testing may be unnecessary for many men, as many prostate cancers grow so slowly that they don’t pose a risk. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors and when you should be screened.
