Love, Dad

After reviewing nearly 100 studies of how parents’ love influences their children, researchers at the University of Connecticut have concluded that a father’s love, or lack of it, for his kids is as influential as Mom’s in turning out good or bad kids. That’s important, they said, because America overemphasizes how much influence mothers have in child-rearing while downplaying the importance of a father’s role in shaping his kids’ personalities and values. One key finding: Moms are often unfairly blamed for problem children, while dads, not moms, seem to play a decisive role in whether a child becomes delinquent, antisocial or a substance abuser. More research is needed to explain this apparent connection.
