Orthopedic Surgery

Bay Medical-Sacred Heart is now offering more options for orthopedics with the addition of local orthopedic surgeons Dr. Steven Goodwiller and Dr. Michael McCormick to our medical staff. Drs. Goodwiller and McCormick both have a long track record of excellence in joint replacement surgery and with their help, the Bay Medical team has put together a comprehensive joint program, complete with a free pre-surgery class that helps our patients know what to expect after surgery and throughout recovery. Our orthopedic nursing unit is located in the new Patient Tower and includes all private suites and a gym for rehabilitation to begin before our patients leave the hospital.

Please check our calendar at right for upcoming joint replacement seminars.

About 1,000 Orthopedic surgeries are performed each year at Bay Medical. Our operating room boasts some of the newest, most sophisticated equipment and instrumentation for arthroscopic surgery, total joint replacement and orthopedic trauma. Our experienced nurses and surgical techs handle the entire range of orthopedic cases on a regular basis.

Arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, and hip, as well as the ankle, wrist and elbow are regularly performed at Bay Medical to diagnose and treat torn cartilage in these joints, often as a result of sports injuries, accidents or other causes. Using high definition cameras and monitors, the Surgeon inserts the instruments into small incisions in the joint space to see and repair the problem which is causing the pain and loss of mobility. Normally, these cases are performed as Outpatient, and the patient goes home the same day, with a minimum of recovery time.

About 500,000 Americans each year will undergo total joint replacement. At Bay Medical-Sacred Heart, our surgeons routinely perform this important procedure for patients whose knee or hip joint cannot be treated any other way. Knee and hip replacement today is much easier than in the past. Patients usually spend about four days in the hospital before going home or to a rehab hospital. Joint replacement in most cases enables patients suffering from severe joint disease to resume more normal activities free of pain.

Bay Medical-Sacred Heart is one of the leading centers for orthopedic trauma in the area. Our surgeons are available 24/7 to treat motor vehicle or other accident victims requiring immediate care. Literally hundreds of patients with hip fractures, broken arms and legs, dislocations and other orthopedic trauma are treated in our operating room each year.
