Can Surgery Be Avoided with Physical Therapy?

Posted on

Panama City — Neck and back pain can be debilitating and often leads to surgery. Physical therapists say there are techniques to help patients alleviate the weakness, pain or numbness associated with neck and back pain and it doesn’t require you to go under the knife. “First thing that went through my mind was have I had a stroke” says 55 year old Dennis Harris. It wasn’t a stroke, it was Stenosis of the Neck. Meaning the spinal cord narrowed, causing pressure on his spinal cord. Harris visited Bay Medical-Sacred Heart physical therapist Gail Harris at HealthPlex. “I didn’t want to have surgery” says Harris. “I wanted to give everything a chance before I went to that extreme”. Harris now uses exercise, massage and cervical traction to help patients like Harris. He had a very successful outcome. In six visits, he was able to reverse the problems. Harris is now back to exercising and the best part is he doesn’t have to have surgery. Don’t wait around, the longer you wait, the worse the problem can become. “You can help protect your back and neck by having good posture and staying active…such as walking on a daily basis” says Harris.
