Comprehensive Cardiac Care
Bay Medical Sacred Heart has the most comprehensive heart care in the area and has the area’s only open-heart surgery. We are also the area’s only Level II Trauma Center. When a heart attack strikes, time in muscle when it comes to saving your heart. Because the care required is as individual as our patients, come to BMSH first to avoid a time-consuming transfer for life-saving surgery. We do more than 6,000 cardiac procedures each year and have more than 200 experienced staff dedicated exclusively to cardiac care from the Emergency Department to the Cath Lab, to CVICU to Surgery and CardioPulmonary Rehab.
Cardiac Cath Lab
Bay Medical’s Heart Institute includes five cardiac catheterization labs that offer 24-hour emergency angioplasty and cardiac stent placements. Bay Medical Sacred Heart is the only hospital from Fort Walton to Tallahassee offering 24-hour emergency angioplasty. We are also the only hospital in the area offering electrophysiology studies (EPS) providing the most accurate and detailed information about the heart, allowing the heart rhythm to be studied, helping to determine exactly what the rhythm problem (arrhythmia) is and how it can be controlled.
The Cardiac Cath Lab has five cath lab suites, fully equipped with cutting edge technology. Procedures include cardiac angioplasty(ballooning), cardiac stenting (drug eluting and bare metal stents), peripheral angioplasty and stenting, carotid stents, atrial septal defects(ASD) closure, pacemaker implant, internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implant, and several different electrophysiology studies.
We are proud to be an integral part of BMSH’s award-winning Heart Institute. Bay Medical has consistently had some of the highest survival rates in the area. We have also received national accreditation as Centers of Excellence for Stroke Care, Heart Attack and Heart Failure. We love getting awards, but our greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that our patients and their families feel confident that their needs will be met while they are under our care.
The Cardiac Cath Lab nurses enjoy outstanding relations with our cardiologists and other team members. We have a highly-skilled critical care RN staff providing nursing care to our patients, several holding national CCRN and/or CVRN certifications.
We understand that our patients and their families come to our department needing tender loving care. It is our goal that our patients and their families leave our facility feeling they have received five-star quality cardiac cath care that was delivered in a compassionate, loving manner. We take great pride in our consistently high customer service scores.
Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is a 15-bed unit, which focuses on the treatment of adult, geriatric and occasionally adolescent patients of adult size with cardiac diagnoses requiring critical care. These diagnoses include, but are not limited to, acute myocardial infarction, cardiovascular surgery (including, but not limited to, coronary artery bypass, coronary valve replacement and repair), AAA repair, cardiac interventions, unstable dysrhythmia, cardiac arrest, thoracic and chest trauma. Treatment of these patients may include ventilator support, dialysis, IABP, transvenous pacemaker, and hemodynamic monitoring. Patients frequently require titrating infusions, including, but not limited to, vaso-pressors, anti-arrhythmics, anti-hypertensives and insulin. The unit provides continuous around-the-clock patient care by a staff of specially trained nurses. CVICU also receives overflow from SICU and MICU.
The CVICU unit nurses enjoy outstanding relations with our cardiac surgeons as well as the other physicians who admit patients to the unit. We know that if a new procedure is being planned, that we will be an integral part of decision-making and that the physicians value our opinions. For example, there are CVICU nurses on both the Bay Medical Critical Care Committee as well as the Cardiac Surgical Council. We are at the table. Our opinions are sought to address critical care and cardiac-specific issues and strategic planning.
Cardiovascular Nursing Unit
The Cardiovascular Unit consists of 60 monitored, inpatient care beds located on the fifth floor. The patient population is predominately adult and geriatric with a rare exception of one to two admissions in the 15-19 year age group.
Criteria for admission to unit for any patient with a cardiovascular diagnosis requiring telemetry on admission include:
- Acute Myocardial Infarction
- Post Operative Cardiovascular Surgery
- Transfers from other units needing cardiac interventions, tests, procedures, and other cardiac related processes
- Cardiac catheterization recovery patients
- Those needing further cardiac interventions.
The nurses who work on the Cardiovascular Nursing Unit play an important role in the Bay Medical Heart Institute. We are proud to be members of an award-winning team: number one in cardiac care in Northwest Florida; top 5 percent in nation for cardiology services; and past recipient of national accreditations (The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) as Heart Attack and Heart Failure Centers of Excellence.
Why do nurses want be a member of our team? That’s easy. Our nurses enjoy a fast-paced work environment that fosters a collaborative approach to cardiovascular care. Our nurses work closely with our cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and other cardiovascular team members in a collegial manner that encourages professional growth. We support and encourage our nurses to advance their careers, such as obtaining national certifications or cross-training to work in the heart cath lab or in the CVICU unit.
