Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke and reacting to those signs immediately is an important step in preventing long term disability or even death from a stroke.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. About 700,000 Americans experience a new or recurrent stroke each year.*
Symptoms of stroke include:
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
- Weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of the body in the face, arm or leg
- Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Dimness or loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
These symptoms may only last a few minutes and only some symptoms may occur. ItŐs important not to ignore signals of a stroke even if they disappear. Treatment within the first three hours after the onset of a stroke could mean the difference between life and death or long-term disability.
If you feel you may be experiencing a stroke, or know someone who may be experiencing one, call 9-1-1 immediately and insist on going to Bay Medical.
Bay Medical is the first hospital in Florida to be certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO) as a Center of Excellence in Stroke Care.
Bay Medical has had a Stroke Team in place since 1997 that consists of emergency physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists as well as numerous support staff from EMS, the emergency department, the radiology and diagnostic department, rehabilitation, and virtually every other aspect of patient care.
