New Intravascular Ultrasound Technology Available at BMC Used In Diagnosing & Preventing Heart Disease

October 15, 2002

Bay Medical Center is pleased to announce the availability of Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) in our cardiac catheterization labs. This state of the art technology uses ultrasound and x-ray technology on a catheter, which allows the physician to see inside the arteries of the heart and pinpoint potential trouble spots that have previously gone undetected. An angiogram, which has been the standard diagnostic tool for cardiologists, produces a two-dimensional image of the heart, however IVUS provides a three-dimensional cross-sectional view. Introduced into an artery, IVUS can measure blood vessel dimensions, demonstrate the severity and composition of the underlying atherosclerotic plaque, and immediately assess the results of an angioplasty or stent procedure.
