Bay Medical Physician Offers New Surgical Solution To Alleviate the Pain of Arthritis in the Hand

January 21, 2003

Bay Medical is pleased to announce the availability of a new surgical solution to alleviate the pain of arthritis in the joints of the fingers Ð the Pyrocarbon Total Joint Replacement System. For 30 years, the only surgical option to treat arthritis pain in the small joints of the hand was the implantation of silicone spacers or permanent fusion. However after receiving FDA approval in March of 2002, a new pyrocarbon prosthesis is now available to replace these small joints and provide pain relief, increased range of movement, as well as cosmetic improvement for arthritis sufferers.

The Pyrocarbon Total Joint System is a two-component total joint prosthesis that features design characteristics that are biologically compatible, affix without the use of cement, exhibit superior wear and strength and restore normal joint movement. This system also meets the needs of those suffering from a variety of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic arthritis. Patients, who prior to surgery, could not make a fist, pinch or grip without tremendous pain have been given the use of a functional hand once again. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and requires only a numbing of the arm.

Dr. Rafael Williams, an orthopedic surgeon on staff at Bay Medical who specializes in hand surgery, is the only physician in our area offering this procedure at this time. His office can be reached at 522- 4263 (HAND).
