Bay Medical Celebrates Construction Milestone

Panama City, FL – Bay Medical celebrates a construction milestone today as 200 cubic yards of concrete is poured to form the initial footer of a $60 million expansion. This footer will form the foundation for the elevators and stairwells in the new five-story patient care tower and will take 20 cement trucks approximately five hours to pour. The new tower is expected to be completed by the end of 2010 and will house 144 private patient rooms which include new intensive care areas.
Fast Construction Facts:
- To reach this point, our crew has moved 25,000 cubic yards of dirt in order to make our new building level with the rest of the hospital.
- To support the new structure, we drilled a total of 114 holes 18 inches in diameter, 60 feet deep, and filled them with 600 cubic yards of concrete, grout, and 11 tons of reinforcing steel bars.
- We formed the shape of the mass footing, installed 8 tons of reinforcing steel bars, and today 20 cement trucks will pour 200 cubic yards of concrete in the mass footing - a process that will take 5-6 hours.
- On this project, there are 66 people employed who are living and spending money right here in our area.
- We have financed and used bonds to cover $60 million of the expense of the expansion. The Bay Medical Foundation has stepped up to raise an additional $5 million to help equip the new building. We are pleased to report that it already has raised more then half of the goal.
