 Give Blood. It Saves Lives.

Blood

Bay Medical Sacred Heart partners with oneblood by holding numerous blood drives each year. All of the blood donated stays in the local community and provides life-saving plasma to people you may know. Blood drives are usually publicized throughout the hospital and notices are placed on FaceBook.

General Information About Donating

Am I eligible to donate blood?
You must be 17 years old, weight 110 pounds, be healthy and free of any infection. Note that even if you were ineligible in the past, you may now qualify.

What does donating involve?
Donating includes registration (photo ID required), a mini-physical (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and hematocrit), a confidential health history questionnaire, collection of a unit of blood, rest and refreshments.

How often can I donate?
Whole blood donors are eligible every 8 weeks. Plateletapheresis donors are eligible every 4 weeks.

What is Apheresis?
Each blood component (red cells, platelets, plasma) can be donated individually in a process known as apheresis. During the collection, whole blood is drawn from one arm and processed in a sterile, single-use automated system. The desired component is saved and the remaining components are returned to the donor. This type of collection allows a greater volume of the desired component to be collected at one time. The automated system is designed to assure that the donor does not give too much blood.

Reasons to Donate Blood

Giving Blood is Safe. Medical authorities agree that it is not possible to acquire any disease by giving blood. Equipment is sterile and only used once.

Giving Blood Saves Lives. Because donations are processed into a variety of blood components, each donation can help as many as three people — people with leukemia, cancer, anemia, severe burns, accident victims, and those undergoing surgery.

Giving Blood Could Benefit Your Community. Donating blood helps assure that your community will have an adequate blood supply whenever it is needed.
